Ceramics
In ceramics I worked intuitively, exploiting the characteristics of the clay through a variety of methods from throwing and altering to hand-building, slip casting and press-moulding, often in combination. My primary interests were form, contrast and texture. Each piece a response to an idea which tended to evolve naturally during the making process, utilising a variety of surface decorating techniques such as texturing and stamping, and often with applied elements such as lugs, handles, feet and lids, as seemed appropriate.
I particularly loved the process of Raku, with all the elements of surprise and spontaneity involved. Aside from the beautiful copper lustres and crackle whites of Raku, I prefered to keep surfaces unglazed, using texture and oxides or slips and burnishing as decoration.
